The rest of 2012

With the year coming to a close, I realized I hadn't posted anything pretty much since I started this thing.. sooo that's my bad. Here's the rest of them!

Peter's Sunglasses Cake

This was my roommate's sunglasses that he wore all the time.. or my attempt at them :D

The shading was just food coloring mixed together with my finger.. I didn't have an airbrush or anything so I made do..

Mad Hatter Cake

This was from Easter of like, 2010 or something, but somehow never made it onto the site..  I'd never done a lopsided cake before so it's a bit rough but I was pleased with it!

The whole time I was terrified the little squares would start popping off..

And because Easter is clearly all about eggs and small barnyard animals, I topped it with this.

Sarah's Teacup Cake

For Sarah's birthday, we decided to use the new teacup cupcake silicon baking cups Liz had.. Then we just took a round cake, sliced it in half, folded it up, and turned it into a little teapot. Overall, I was psyched :)

not a whole lot to say about these.. but you get the idea

I think the sprinkles really made them. Go team.

Annnnnd that's all I got for 2012.. not a very impressive showing BUT I got an airbrush for Christmas, so there should be good things in the works for 2013. Happy New Year everybody!

Djeinam's Sun Cake!

So it's been.. siiix months since I made anything?? How sad. But now that I'm back in school and have many friends with equally many birthdays, I'm sure things will pick up. This is the first of what promises to be many more attempts to decorate cakes despite my complete lack of training haha.

It's a sun.. because that's the only thing she really mentioned that she liked besides green, red, and yellow. I really liked the swirl on the edges :)

Here's a close-up.. as well as a close up of the hole that randomly showed up when a lump of sugar decided to fall out of what I thought was nice, smooth fondant. Oh well.. this is why I don't compete I suppose..

That's all for now :)

Enjoy the rest of September.. which incidentally is my least favorite month as it is completely infested with allergens lurking in every corner waiting to pummel the crap out of your respiratory abilities.. but I digress..

Valentines Day!

So I've been making cupcakes for Zpizza in Mammoth Lakes, CA.. these are two of my favorites from today's Valentine's day batch :

Then a friend asked me to make a cake for his girlfriend.. they didn't want fondant.. so I practiced my icing.. which I'm not so good at yet.. but it turned out pretty cute anyway. It's a flourless chocolate cake with cream cheese icing and strawberries.

Hamster Cake

This one was for my roommate's birthday.. it's modeled after her hamster, Charley.

It's actually a dark chocolate brownie with cream cheese icing, covered with crushed waffle cones.  The house and Charley are Ho-hos covered in fondant..

It begins!

When I was six, I told my mom I wanted to make my own birthday cakes. The result was some monstrosity with marshmallow men and toothpicks poking out of it.. more hazard than birthday treat really..

But after twenty years of being completely obsessed with making cakes, I've finally admitted to having a problem and am now trying to make something useful out of it. Thus, Phat Kid Cakes was born. The name came from my awesome roommate, but I think it's pretty fitting. I was always a pudgy kid when I was little.. and not so little. I'm also a closet nerd, so the obnoxious use of the "Ph" spelling of fat seems pretty fitting. I think it's funny and everyone else will probably tell me it's lame.. so that seems about right.

Sadly, of all the cakes I've made, I've only managed to remember to photograph two, both from this year. So we'll start with those.. and if anyone decides to hire me I'll update!

The bunny cake from Easter:

and the UCLA Tailgate Party cake:

That's all for now.. spread the word.. especially in Mammoth..
I just wanna make cake :D
